From Old School Iron to Functional Fire
My journey with weights began when I was just 14, diving into the old-school bodybuilding scene. Like many, life threw its curveballs – work, responsibilities, and those inevitable periods where the gym took a backseat. But the call of the iron, that feeling of strength and discipline, always pulled me back.
I officially stepped into the world of personal training back in 2012, even stepping on stage for my first (and only!) bodybuilding show around that time. Over the years, I’ve spent countless hours in various gyms, always learning, always evolving.
The real turning point, however, came after my daughter was born. Suddenly, fitness wasn’t just about lifting heavy; it was about having the boundless energy to keep up with an action-packed toddler, to be present and active in every moment. I realized I needed more. I found functional fitness, dove in headfirst, and honestly, I haven’t looked back since. It ignited a new passion for a different kind of strength – one built for life, for performance, and for the sheer joy of movement.
Embracing the Grind: The “Never Quit” Philosophy
There’s something truly special about those long, grueling workouts – the ones that strip you down, test your limits, and demand relentless persistence. They forge more than just muscle; they build a “never quit” mentality. This is the fire I bring to my own training, and it’s the spirit I aim to ignite in my clients, especially those preparing for demanding events like Hyrox.
My Coaching Path: Building Strength in Our Community
My commitment to helping others has led me to several rewarding coaching roles:
- Since 2023, I’ve been helping individuals build their foundational strength and achieve their training goals as a Personal Trainer and Class Coach at Fitness Force in Keswick. I continue to welcome clients there.
- Later in 2023, I also took on the role of Strength and Conditioning Coach with Caspian Sports Club, broadening my experience with athletes.
- My involvement with the fantastic team at Crossfit Birch Bender expanded significantly in early 2024. In addition to coaching and personal training, I’m now the Hyrox Program Coordinator. This exciting role involves programming and leading our two dedicated Hyrox classes each week, and I also develop the gym’s daily mobility programming to help all our members move better, recover effectively, and reduce injury risk.
- I’m also proud to now be the Head of the Strength and Conditioning program at Caspian Sports Club, shaping how our athletes train and perform.
Falling for Hyrox: The Ultimate Fitness Race
In October 2024, I experienced the electric atmosphere of the inaugural Canadian Hyrox event in Toronto and was instantly hooked. The blend of strength, endurance, and pure grit resonated deeply with my training philosophy. That same month, I also challenged myself and performed well at the Spartan Race at Blue Mountain.
The Hyrox fire continued to burn, leading me to become a certified Hyrox Performance Coach. I’m already deep in training for my next Hyrox race in Toronto in early October 2025, and I’m passionate about bringing others along on this incredible journey.
